You're not alone if you've never heard of the Toyota Hilux. This popular midsize truck is produced outside the U.S., but 2025 marks its global debut. Cemented as one of the most popular trucks overseas, the Hilux has garnered a reputation for rugged reliability and versatility. Marketed as a rival to the Ford Ranger, the Hilux is sure to delight when it's released later this year.

New & Updated

While the Hilux is new to Americans, it's been available overseas for a while. That's why the Hilux is getting refreshed for the 2026 model year. Drivers can expect an updated design, powertrains, and performance.

Refined Design

For now, Toyota is keeping things close to the vest about design specifics. However, with the help of digital rendering specialists, we have an educated guess of what the truck may look like.

It appears as if the front end will feature slim headlights and a boxy grille. The front bumper appears to have sculpted side sections and a prominent skid plate. As for the fenders, these appear to use plastic cladding, and the rear likely sports updated taillights and integrated steps on the bumper.

Enhanced Performance

As for the model's powertrains, it's believed that the Hilux uses a mild-hybrid 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. There will also be gasoline and diesel options depending on the market. Although not confirmed to be coming with the Hilux, Toyota has showcased prototypes with fully electric and hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains. So, a fully electric Hilux is not entirely out of the question.
